CFC
and United Way Campaigns
Over
the past several years, NYAC has been
designated as a participating agency
in the annual Combined Federal Campaign
(CFC) and local United Way Campaign.
Each year, NYAC has benefited from
the tremendous generosity of those
involved in these workplace giving
campaigns; and each year contributions
to NYAC have grown! Last year, we
received a record amount in pledges
thanks to each of you who participated!
If
your employer participates in the
United Way Campaign or if you are
a federal employee, please designate
NYAC as your beneficiary. These critical
dollars help to ensure that NYAC can
provide the highest quality programs
and services to our more than 130
member organizations and the hundreds
of thousands of young people they
serve.
Of
course your contribution is fully
tax-deductible and you can rest assured
that every dollar you give goes to
work directly in advocating for the
needs of young LGBTQ people.

Donating
Appreciated Securities
Why
donate stocks, bonds or mutual funds?
Tax
laws provide that someone can donate
an appreciated asset and take an immediate
deduction on their taxes for the current
market value regardless of the original
cost. That means that if you donate
stocks, bonds, or mutual funds directly
to NYAC, you would be able to report
a charitable contribution for the
full market value of your gift while
not incurring a capital gains tax.
For
Example:
Jaron wants to make a contribution
to NYAC and has a portfolio that includes
100 shares of XYZ Communications stock.
Jaron purchased the stock in 1995
for $20 / share for a total of $2,000.
Today, the shares are valued at $7,000.
Jaron decides that he wants to use
the proceeds from the sale of the
XYZ stock to make a donation to NYAC.
If
Jaron sells the stock, he realizes
a capital gain of $5,000 and will
owe as much as $1,000 in federal long-term
capital gains tax. NYAC would receive
a gift of $6,000 and Jaron could report
a charitable contribution of $6,000.
However,
if Jaron donates his 100 shares of
XYZ stock directly to NYAC, he would
not incur a capital gains tax and
the entire $7,000 would benefit NYAC.
Jaron would also be able to report
a charitable contribution of $7,000.
In this scenario, Jaron makes the
most of his contribution for himself
and NYAC.
How
do I donate stocks, bonds or mutual
funds to NYAC?
Donating stock to NYAC is easy. We
have a brokerage account in Washington,
DC and you can transfer the stocks
electronically.
All
you need to do is contact your broker
with the following information and
ask them to call our account manager
with your name and address so that
NYAC can be sure to acknowledge your
contribution.

"There's
so much I haven't done that I always
wanted to do --parachute from a plane,
open a bed and breakfast, write a
trashy romance novel. If only I had
the time . . . But that's life. So
lately I've been thinking about loose
ends. I don't want my savings gobbled
up by probate, and I've been wanting
to find a way to help youth in our
community after I'm gone. Making out
a will isn't gruesome -- it's basic,
like savings accounts or life insurance.
It's a way to say you took pride in
doing things right. You took care
of business, right to the end. Of
course, I'd really rather live forever.
But in this life, you do what you
can."
At
NYAC, we know there are so many reasons
why people become one of our financial
contributors; and we know how important
it is for us to provide a variety
of means for you to make a difference.
Over the years, many of you have asked
us about planned giving options and
we are thankful for those individuals
who have included us in their giving
even after they have left this world.
Planned
giving demonstrates thoughtful preparation
and reflects your heartfelt desire
to make a difference in the lives
of young people. You know how hard
growing up can be, and your investment
can make it easier for countless young
people whose lives are still ahead
of them.
Although
we cannot provide legal advice, NYAC
can refer you to a team of individuals
who can assist you in meeting all
of your estate planning needs. We
know this is not an easy subject to
talk about, but its better to discuss
it now so that you can be assured
your wishes are clearly understood.
