Results of Survey #1 ("Help Us Set Our Priorities")
Question 1: Please rank in order of importance (with 1 being the most important and 10 being the least important) the following proposed Youth Voice topics. If we've left any off our list, please add them in the comment box, along with the ranking you would assign them.
Here are the most important topics, according to our Youth Voice members:
- Health concerns (safe sex, HIV, HPV, tobacco use, etc.)
- Hate crimes against LGBTQ youth
- Body image/self-acceptance
- School issues (acceptance, GSAs, being out, etc.)
** Note that we will be adding family issues and communication to this category, based on feedback received.
- The 2008 Presidential elections
- Gay youth and the media
- Spirituality/faith
- War and the U.S. military
- Pride
- Social networking (where you hang out/meet people, Facebook, MySpace)
Question 2: We got some really great responses to our question "What message do you wish mainstream America knew about what it's like to be a LGBTQ youth in today's society?" Our favorite answer was from Sebastian in Louisiana, who wrote:
It's not glamorous, we're not like the tokenized fabulous folk on tv. In fact we're really no different than you at all. The only thing that makes us different is the way society treats us, and how we respond to that. There really is no unifying thing to being LGBTQ, except the bias we all experience in one form or another. Society "others" us, and only we can truly define ourselves. I mean, isn't that all anyone is allowed?
