John McCain has served as a Republican senator from Arizona since 1987. Prior to his election, he served as a U.S. representative for Arizona and a naval aviator. During his military service in Vietnam McCain was captured as a prisoner of war. One of the concerns he has expressed is the current spending habits of the federal government. McCain ran for and lost the Republican nomination for President in 2000.

Sarah Palin joins John McCain on the campaign trail from her office as the Governor of Alaska. While Governor Palin became the first female to be govern Alaska in 2006, she is also the first female major party vice presidential candidate. She is known for her interest in prioritizing resource and workforce development, education, public health and safety, and infrastructure development. As a one time mayor and city council member of Wasilla , Alaska, Palin has also stressed the conservation of domestic and natural gas resources.

Barack Obama has served as a Democratic senator from Illinois since 2005. Prior to his election, he served as a state senator for Illinois, a constitutional law professor, a civil rights attorney, and a community organizer around issues of poverty. Obama is the fifth African-American person to hold office in the U.S. Senate (including African-American senators elected during the era of Reconstruction), and is the first African-American to be the presumptive nominee for President of the United States.

Joe Biden

Since 1972, Joe Biden has been a Senator of Delaware as he won his first election at age 29. While this Senator is known for his commitment to bipartisanship, his priorities include being a leader in foreign policy,  terrorism, drug policy, and fighting crime. He is responsible for writing the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), that works with victims of violence, Senator Biden also introduced the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 to increase the number of police officers in America and the College Affordability and Creating Chances for Educational Success for Student (ACCESS) ACT, that  increases college planning in schools, Pell grants, and tax incentives.

Nowhere in the Constitution is there a limit to only two political parties. United States history vibrates with the voices of dozens of “alternative” parties. Once upon a time, even the Democrats and Republicans were new on the playing field.
