More than 25% of people who are infected with HIV are unaware of their status; youth (ages 13-24) continue to be disproportionately effected by HIV/AIDS and hesitate to seek HIV/AIDS services. “You Know Different” is NYAC’s award-winning HIV testing social marketing campaign. For the last five years, organizations across the nation have utilized “You Know Different” to increase the number of LGBTQ youth testing for HIV at their organizations. NYAC is now launching an online version of “You Know Different” called yKNOWd on social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace. Workshop Description -
This discussion-based workshop will address the conflicts and barriers created by the "down-er than thou" mentality that often leads to feelings of exclusion and grudges in social justice organizing. Speaking specifically to youth and student organizers, this session will discuss and then outline strategies to build communities of strong organizers instead of alienating one another with destructive judeents. In an effort to create sustainable activism, we will develop real methods for confronting the effects of judgmental conlict.

If your organization is directly serving young adults between the ages 18-24, you might be qualified to become part of the nationwide LGBTQI Young Adult Tobacco Needs Assessment. The first step in preparing your organization to be part of the Needs Assessment is attending this webinar that will include all the details and logistics required in becoming one of NYAC’s partners in this initiative. If you plan to distribute the needs assessment to the young adults you serve, at least one person from your organization must take this tutorial about the survey tool and submit the evaluation/registration form provided during the webinar to receive the stipends given to the first 50 organizations to sign up with NYAC.

HIV: Hey, It's Viral! is a groundbreaking sex-positive 20-minute video from Beyondmedia Education addressing HIV/AIDS prevention and activism from youth perspectives. The video shows young people what HIV is, how it is transmitted, and how it can be prevented - all spun with a fun soundtrack and entertaining animations to illustrate the science of HIV/AIDS. Focusing on risk reduction, safer sex practices and the importance of testing, the movie stresses the idea that anyone can get HIV, and everyone can help prevent it.
The HIV: Hey It's Viral DVD includes the 20 minute video, plus extra bonus features that explain in depth the biology of HIV, how to use a condom, how to get tested for HIV, as well as individual personal stories of young people living with HIV. Other features include a workbook for educators, an action guide for activists, educational visual aids and more.

A Movement, Not A Market is a tobacco and alcohol preention resource for the LGBTQI community. It is a FREE multimedia educational resource on media literacy, the portrayal of the LGBTQI community in media, and the targeting of the LGBTQI community with tobacco and alcohol products.
This DVD-ROM can help improve the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and produce media messages, and to become an active participant in our media culture. This resource contains 52 media examples (from TV shows, films, magazines, and counter-marketing campaigns), a printable discussion guide, and handouts.
A Movement, Not A Market can be used in classrooms, community groups, and other group settings to:
- understand media literacy in the context of alcohol and tobacco prevention.
- gain more awareness regarding the marketing of tobacco and alcohol products to the LGBTQI community.
- explore portrayals of the LGBTQI community in the media.
